Among Mountains
Thread, wood, washers, nails
23 x 8 in.

Among Mountains was inspired by both ancient Chinese scroll paintings and my own surroundings as I reside in the desert valley of Las Vegas, Nevada. I have always been fascinated by how the scroll paintings managed to make such an overwhelmingly solid environment look and feel so light and airy, and am fascinated by how the silhouettes of the desert mountains almost look like paper cut-outs at certain points of the day, like they could easily be blown away by the wind. Among Mountains features only the outline of the mountain figures, while the inside of the mountains reveal the fragile network of thread holding them together. The threads of the mountain's outlines rain down, weighted by the washers which hang below the invented "canvas" of the piece, implying the potential destruction of these structures due to industrialization.
